AGM – Research and Industry Cooperation

The Annual General Meeting 2020 was held on 29 May. The Ministry of Environment and Industry, the sole owner of Fiskaaling, praised the results. The Ministry expressed that Fiskaaling executes its mission competently by producing knowledge for sustainable Faroese aquaculture.

Annual activities and audited books were reviewed as Jóhanna Lava Køtlum, CEO, presented the state of the limited company. She highlighted a total of 22 research projects during 2019, and the company performed around 25 service and counselling services throughout the year.

Cooperation between the aquaculture industry and Fiskaaling is excellent, and the industry is always prepared to lend a hand when practical tasks require hardware or manpower, e.g. when research equipment is deployed, tests are taken etc.

Among the diverse research projects there are fish welfare in exposed areas, Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture, and improved utilisation of the resources, as well as lice models, lumpfish biology and nutritional requirements and smolt research.

Also, Fiskaaling provides a number of services for the aquaculture industry, such as lice counts, lumpfish studies, sex determination, micro algae, and current measurements.

The synergy of Fiskaaling’s research and service operations provides a base for developing new and improved knowledge that benefits the aquaculture industry.

“Fiskaaling’s production of knowledge represents distinct invisible value in the aquaculture industry that contributes to developing and strengthening the industry, the research community, and the Faroese community as a whole,” says Minister of the Environment and Industry Mr. Helgi Abrahamsen.

Results

Research activities at Fiskaaling have produced real results that continue to provide the Faroese aquaculture industry with new and useful knowledge. Many research projects are conducted in cooperation with partners in industry. This presents the research activities with a good operating basis.

Fiskaaling also participates in international research projects. This means that the company has access to an even wider range of knowledge and expertise which may be utilised in a Faroese context.

Financially, Fiskaaling depends on the annual appropriation from the national budget for aquaculture purposes. The public involvement secures wholly or partly that Fiskaaling maintains the ability to finance projects that produce aquaculture knowledge. Additional income is generated from the various services that Fiskaaling provides for the Faroese aquaculture industry, as well as international research grants for various research projects.

The AGM approved the result of the year, showing a profit of 354,000 DKK.
