13-Year-Old Jógvan Won the Draw - Congratulations!

On December 8, the annual draw for a DKK 10,000 prize took place. The winner was a 13-year-old boy named Jógvan Vang from Kaldbak. He had sent Fiskaaling two envelopes containing scale samples and measurements of sea trouts. Jógvan plans to use the prize money to buy a PlayStation 5, fishing gear, and oilskins.

Our current knowledge about sea trout in Faroese lakes and ocean is limited. In collaboration with the Faroese Aquaculture Association, the Sea Trout Project aims to build new, basic knowledge about sea trout. To participate, you need to catch a trout and post scale samples and measurements to Firum. The scale samples can provide us with valuable information about the fish, such as its age and where it has been. The winning trout measured 39 cm in length and weighed 500 grams. It had lived two years in the river and two years at sea. After one year in the river, the fish was about 8.7 cm, and after two years, it was 16.4 cm. The fish spent two years at sea, and after the first year at sea, it measured 31.9 cm. When it was caught early in the spring after another year at sea, it measured 39 cm.

Since December 1, 2019, anglers have had the opportunity to participate in the annual lottery of 10,000 kr. The lottery is part of the Sea Trout Project, organized by Fiskaaling and supported by the Faroese Fisheries Association. The project for Faroese herring will continue in 2024, and Fiskaaling invites ongoing anglers to submit scale samples in envelopes in the same way as before. The lottery for another 10,000 tax-free Danish kroner will take place in December 2024.
